WorldPride month x Cinemien: Rains over Babel

Het hiernamaals krijgt een verleidelijk randje. De film speelt zich af in nachtclub Babel, een mysterieuze plek waar stervelingen in aanraking komen met La Flaca – de personificatie van de dood. In deze betoverende setting proberen bezoekers haar te slim af te zijn door levensjaren in te zetten als inzet in hun persoonlijke zoektochten. We volgen onder anderen Dante, die antwoorden zoekt over zijn verleden voordat zijn tijd met La Flaca verstrijkt; Monet, wiens lichaam langzaam vervalt terwijl hij het probeert terug te winnen; Timbí en Uma, die alles op alles zetten om hun dierbaren te redden; en Jacob, die balanceert tussen angst en bevrijding vlak voor zijn debuut als dragperformer. Het verhaal is doordrenkt van mystiek, eigenaardige charme en absurdistische flair, en speelt zich af in een wereld waarin genderdiversiteit vanzelfsprekend is en existentiële thema’s als liefde, verlies, geloof, identiteit en bevrijding de boventoon voeren. De film weeft herinneringen en lotgevallen samen tot een magisch-realistisch universum, waarin niets is wat het lijkt – van een pratende salamander tot uitzinnig production design met een punkrandje. Visueel is de film een wild experiment vol eigenzinnige details. Throughout the year, but especially during the month of July, Plein Theater gives unfiltered visibility to film and emerging artists engaging with queer themes. This year in the spirit of the extraordinary WorldPride Amsterdam, which theme UNITY stands for solidarity, connection, and a shared fight for equality. An important part of the programme originates from an open call as part of our co-creation programme, where shared ownership and participation are key. Ten emerging and talented artists present work that engages with queer perspectives, identity, the body, freedom, and the many ways in which we can celebrate ourselves and each other. We believe that a theater is not only a stage, but also a meeting center where artists, local residents, communities, and audiences collectively shape what is presented. Our co-creation programme can be recognised by the #GetInvolved label. From 15th to 19th of July we screen ten queer films by the feminist film collective Cinemien! For decades, Cinemien has been a pioneer in showcasing powerful women’s stories, LGBTQIA+ perspectives, and groundbreaking documentaries. We also Bring Drag Back to the Theatre with a special WorldPride edition featuring the irresistible drag queen Sederginne. And last but not least, together with queer.red and Lesbique, we explore the boundaries of queer erotique during Darkroom on Stage!
