Melkweg, The Milky Way, occupies a former dairy factory on Lijnbaansgracht, a two-minute walk from Paradiso. Together they form the axis of Amsterdam's live music scene, but Melkweg has its own distinct character: it's a full cultural complex rather than a concert hall. Two stages (the Max, capacity around 700, and the smaller Luna), a cinema, a gallery, and a café-restaurant that draws a crowd even on non-event nights.
The programming is deliberately eclectic: metal sits next to jazz, electronic next to hip-hop, with regular club nights filling the Max on weekends. Melkweg is one of the main Amsterdam venues for international touring acts at the mid-size level, and a reliable home for Dutch breakthrough artists. The cinema screens cult classics, documentaries, and curated film series, worth checking independently of the music programme.
The gallery space hosts rotating exhibitions that are free to browse during opening hours. Melkweg also runs an outdoor stage during summer festivals and one-off events in the Lijnbaansgracht area. The building is slightly maze-like once you're inside, the old dairy layout hasn't been entirely rationalised, which adds to the sense that something interesting is always happening somewhere you haven't been yet.
