Occii (Onafhankelijk Cultureel Centrum in Initiatief) is Amsterdam's longest-running underground venue, operating continuously since 1983 in a squatted building near Vondelpark in Oud-West. It is volunteer-run, non-commercial, and fiercely independent, the only venue in Amsterdam that has maintained these principles for over forty years. It has survived multiple legal challenges to its occupancy and remains as resolutely itself as it was at the start. The building itself dates to 1883–84, designed as a horse tram garage and stables, a genuine piece of Amsterdam industrial heritage.
The programme covers punk, metal, experimental, noise, folk, hip-hop, and anything else that doesn't fit the commercial mainstream. Shows are inexpensive, typically €5–10 at the door, and the bar prices are among the cheapest in Amsterdam. The room is small and the sound is loud. There's a courtyard for summer events that operates as one of the more relaxed outdoor spaces in the city.
Occii doesn't have a PR team or a marketing budget. Events appear on the website and are distributed through flyers and word of mouth. The community that gathers here is self-selecting: people who found it through someone they trust, or who specifically sought out Amsterdam's genuine underground rather than its commercial approximation. It's the right place to start looking.
