Splendor is a concert space on Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat in the city centre, occupying a former bathhouse and operated by the musicians who founded it in 2013. It is Amsterdam's most unusual music institution: a democratic collective of professional musicians who programme, fund, and perform in their own venue, with membership income providing the financial base. The building's tiled bathhouse rooms and high ceilings give it an acoustic character that few purpose-built venues can match. The programme centres on jazz, chamber music, and contemporary composition, with a particular strength in Dutch and European musicians working at the intersection of these traditions. Events often have an informal, insider quality, the musicians and audience know each other, and conversations after concerts run long. The membership model means that Splendor regulars get early access and discounted tickets, making it worth joining if you go more than occasionally. Splendor is an example of Amsterdam's cultural institutions at their most idealistic and most functional: artists creating the infrastructure they wish existed, and making it work. The venue is a short walk from Waterlooplein in a part of the centre that rewards slow exploration.
