Teatro Munganga

Teatro Munganga is a 60-seat theatre near the south entrance of Vondelpark, housed in the same monumental former horse tram depot that is home to OCCII. The building dates to 1883–84, designed by architect Abraham Salm, and is a listed national monument. Munganga was founded in 1987 by Brazilian actors and directors Cláudia Maoli and Carlos Lagoeiro, giving the space a bilingual Dutch–Portuguese cultural identity that has persisted through nearly four decades of Amsterdam cultural life.

The programming spans theatre, music, dance — including butoh and contemporary forms — puppetry, lectures, and workshops. There is a particular strength in Latin American and Brazilian performing arts: work that rarely finds a home at larger Amsterdam institutions. The scale enforces a specific kind of intimacy: 60 seats means the audience is close enough to the performers that something is always at stake. It's a very different experience from a conventional theatre.

Teatro Munganga operates as a genuinely neighbourhood-rooted cultural space, connecting Amsterdam's Brazilian and Portuguese-speaking communities with a broader audience for international performance. It's one of those venues that rewards following rather than visiting once — the programme has a consistent character that becomes clearer over time, and the work tends to be more interesting than what you'd find at more polished addresses.
