Toekomstmuziek,"future music", is a live music venue in the Houthavens with an unusually explicit philosophy: to make the music industry more compassionate. The founders work as musicians and venue operators simultaneously, which gives them a perspective on booking and working conditions that most venues ignore. The result is a space that artists want to return to, which shows in the quality of the programme. The venue occupies a ground-floor space near the IJ waterfront in the Houthavens, a formerly industrial neighbourhood now in active development. Programming spans reggae, electronic music, jazz, singer-songwriters, and experimental genres, deliberately broad as a statement against genre specialisation. The room holds a few hundred people and the acoustics are taken seriously. Toekomstmuziek is one of the newer additions to Amsterdam's live music ecosystem and one of the most interesting. It represents what happens when people who understand the problems of the industry build something new: a venue that is sustainable, fair, and genuinely good. Worth following closely as it develops.
