Tolhuistuin is a cultural garden and event space in Amsterdam Noord, set in the former canteen building of the old Shell campus and its surrounding grounds. It sits a short walk from the NDSM ferry point and feels like a different city from the Leidseplein cluster — quieter, more neighbourhood-rooted, and consistently surprising in what it programmes.
In summer, the garden stage is one of the best outdoor music venues in Amsterdam: informal, leafy, with decent food and drink options and a crowd that's there for the event rather than the scene. The programme mixes concerts, film nights, community markets, debates, and family events. Indoor programming continues year-round in the main hall, which is flexible enough to work for everything from club nights to theatre to book launches.
Tolhuistuin has become central to the cultural identity of Noord alongside NDSM and EYE Filmmuseum. Entry is often free or low-cost for community events, and the space is genuinely welcoming to people who aren't regular cultural venue attendees. The ferry from behind Centraal runs frequently and is free — Noord is much more accessible than it looks on a map.
