Zaal 100

Zaal 100 is a cooperative cultural venue in Amsterdam West that grew out of a squatted community centre in 1984. It remains collectively managed, deeply affordable, and programmed entirely by the community it serves. The building on De Wittenstraat hosts an eclectic and intentionally unpretentious programme: amateur theatre, jazz jam sessions, poetry readings, dance performances, film nights, and a kitchen serving vegan food on event evenings. What makes Zaal 100 unusual is the deliberate absence of curation-for-prestige. Events are made possible by the community that uses the space rather than booked by a team optimising for audience numbers. This produces programming that is sometimes rough and sometimes surprisingly good, and an atmosphere of genuine participation rather than spectatorship. Zaal 100 is one of the longest-surviving examples of Amsterdam's 1980s squatter culture, still operating on the original terms.
